Kingdom Workers are Loved

Do my problems actually matter to a God who is supposedly listening to everyone? If I’m someone who can barely ignore my phone lighting up with a new message while a friend is sharing something with me, does God hear me asking for help when there are more than seven billion others possibly doing the same? When I unexpectedly lost my dad last year, this question became one I struggled to answer.

Luckily, the gospels show Jesus giving us some insight into this lonely question. Mark 5 tells of Jesus stopping to acknowledge a woman when he was on the way to heal another girl who was dying, not to mention the fact that he was in a crowd of people pressing against him and vying for his attention.  This woman, who had been physically suffering for twelve years believes Jesus can heal her, reaches for his cloak, is healed, and he chooses to stop to see who she is. She immediately confesses that it was her who touched him, and he responds in verse 34 with, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” After receiving this love from Jesus, her life is changed—who knows what good works she ended up doing because of her faith in that moment!

I love this story because it reminds us that God is a God who chooses to listen. When you’re going through something challenging, it’s easy to think it shouldn’t matter to anyone else or that God is too preoccupied with other people also needing attention. Jesus demonstrates in that moment that our problems matter and that he is able and willing to give his listening ear and healing power. In my darkest moments through losing my favorite person, this truth has molded my faith like never before. We must remember that even with a crowd of people demanding his attention while on his way to heal a dead girl, Jesus stops and he loves.
