  • Kingdom Workers Love - Trueblood

Imagine this: you’re at school, getting things out of your locker, getting ready to head to first period, when your best friend stops by to say hi. Immediately, you notice a huge booger hanging out of his nose. What do you do? Well, you have a few choices:  you could laugh out loud, and yell loud enough for everyone to hear, “Oh, gross! You have this huge booger hanging out of your nose!” If you go this route, you’re telling the truth, but honestly, you’re also kind of being a jerk. Your second choice is to simply ignore it because you’re afraid of embarrassing your friend. In this case, you seem to be doing the loving thing by not embarrassing him, but really, it’s more about your embarrassment. You’re worried about being in an uncomfortable situation, so you keep an important truth from him that he really needs to know. We all know the feeling of horror when we realize that we have something in our teeth, or something hanging out of our nose, or that our fly is down. It’s that moment of panic wondering, “how long has it been like that?” and “how many people have seen it?” and “why did nobody care to let us know?” The third option is to gently lean in towards your friend and whisper, “Hey, you have a little something hanging in your nose.” In this, you’re telling the truth in a way that is loving and respectful. And, it’s even better if you have a kleenex to hand him to take care of the problem.

In Ephesians chapter 4, verse 15, Paul says that, “by speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect, the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ” See, if we focus on just telling the truth, we can easily become jerks who beat people over the head with scripture, But, if we just focus on being loving, it’s easy to ignore the truth for fear of being in an uncomfortable spot. But when we speak the truth in love, and allow others to do the same for us, then we all grow and mature into who Christ calls us to be.
