Week 1: Day 3 Distracted

September 21, 2016

  • Day Three: Distracted

    Passage:

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42, NLT)

    Perspective:

Have you ever tried to concentrate on one thing for a really long time? It’s pretty difficult these days. Even as I’m writing this so you can read it, I’ve been distracted by my phone buzzing, interrupted by family members asking me questions, had to go to the bathroom, went to get a snack, couldn’t decide on a snack, and now I’m distracted because I never ate that snack.

Our lives are filled with distractions. Some of them are totally normal and good, and others are just wastes of time or even harmful. But they all keep us from being focused. Martha was super distracted, busy making food and getting stuff ready for Jesus, all while Mary just sat around. I totally understand Martha’s frustration with Mary, yet I love how Jesus responds. He doesn’t get angry or reject her; he just invites her to focus her time on being in his presence, and not on all the distractions.

Stop. Listen. Focus. Simply listening and focusing on a person might be the best way to show them the love of Christ.

We’re all Marthas sometimes. Jesus loves us right where we are. Let’s identify the distractions in our lives and aim to focus on Jesus.

    Practice:

Don’t pull out your phone or check your watch while talking with people today. Listen to others—really listen—and stay focused on what they’re saying. Don’t beat yourself up if you get distracted; just remember Jesus, Martha, and Mary.

    Prayer:

Jesus, show me where I’m distracted, and help me to focus on you.
