Week 3: Day 1 Billions

    Day One: Billions

    Passage:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21, NIV)

    Perspective:

If you won a billion dollars, what would you do with it?

Stop and really think about it. Would you spend it? Save it? Share it? Invest it? What happens in your billion-dollar dream situation? How would it change your life?

Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” How we spend our money—our treasure—can reveal just what our priorities and values truly are. (Same thing with our time and our talents!). Show me how you spend your money, and I’ll see where your heart is. Jesus is saying that money can quickly become an idol in our lives, a fake god which takes the place of the real God in our hearts. Which do we think about more and give more of our attention—God or money?

Now, maybe you’re thinking, “I don’t have a lot of money to spend!” That’s okay. Whatever money you do have, how do you think about it? What do you typically purchase? Are you generous or stingy? Do you tend to save money or spend money? Does your relationship with God affect how you view and use money?

A billion dollars. Or God. If you had to choose, which one would you pick?

    Practice:

Think about what you’ve purchased lately, and write down the top 5 ways you typically spend your money in a normal week—food, friends, video games, clothes, books, pets, etc. What are your main priorities according to your spending habits?

    Prayer:

God, help me to be open with my money, and to worship you instead of wealth.

Probably one of the most difficult types of people to be generous to are our enemies. The girl who made fun of you behind your back. The boy who bullies
